约翰·厄里，获剑桥大学社会学博士学位，此后于兰开斯特大学任教，曾任该校社会学系主任、社会科学院院长和研究部部长，以及英国皇家艺术协会研究员、社会科学研究院院士、科学研究评估计划社会学小组成员及主席。目前担任兰开斯大学流动现象研究中心主任。
